Raw and putrid old school Death Metal! Horror Pain Gore Death Productions has brought
together a match made in Hell for this 7-Inch record: Coffins and Spun In Darkness. Japan's
Coffins are firmly established as the new leaders of the underground with their horrific style of
bonecrushing Doom infested Death Metal that is reminiscent of Autopsy and Winter, with
elements of Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. Las Vegas' Spun In Darkness feature ex-members of
Goatlord and bleed old school with their destructive, morbid style of pure Death Metal that is
simply devastating. This release is strictly limited to 500 copies pressed on Black Night vinyl
and features deadly artwork from legendary Chris Moyen. Essential release for fans of Asphyx,
Autopsy, Carnage, Cianide, Divine Eve, Grave, Hooded Menace and Winter!

Even better than the debut! - 90%
Written by Cochino on November 15th, 2007

GOATLORD is known as authentic Black/Doom pioneers, in spite of their short
carrer, which left only one full length. The album that we’re talking about today is
nothing else but a recompilation of old songs (demo versions), a lot of which were
supposed to be part of their second album that never happened.
The fans of the very slow styled Doom they performed in their debut “Reflections of
the Solstice”, might be disappointed because here it almost fainted away. Instead of
Black/Doom I would classify this record as Black/Death, since in the song “Gargoyle
King” they reminded me of PUNGENT STENCH in the years prior to their first full
length; and a song like “Gutaba” could have been recorded by a band like
MACHETAZO. Of course there are still some Doom elements, but they aren’t as
obvious as in the past. In this group of songs the pounding, more rhythmic parts
stand over the rest. In my opinion this change isn’t negative, quite the contrary, If you
rush me, I’d even say that this record is better than the first one.
Totally recommended, but the sound is EXTREMELY raw. Fans of the “pretty and
clean” sound, please stay away.

REVIEW FROM DECIBEL: DISSED! The Wikipedia entry on Goatlord has a disclaimer that “the
subject of this article may not satisfy the notability guideline.” Ouch. Have you ever spent any time
searching Wikipedia? I have, and there are entries on Jesse Camp (that asshole from MTV), Jimmy
Ray (that asshole who did that “Are You Jimmy Ray?” song) and Unhappily Ever After, the really
shitty Married…With Children rip-off with Bobcat Goldthwait as a talking stuffed rabbit. None of them
have their notability called into question. No love for Goatlord? They flew the JL American flag for
budget death metal way back in ’91, when it was still OK to play slow and plodding a lot of the time!
They gave Darkthrone an album title! And like creepy uncles, the ’Lord introduced a lecherous
sexuality to death metal, culminating in the immortal “Acid Orgy”: “Intertwined throbbing mass /
Sweating flesh comes together.” C’mon, that’s NOTABLE! Fifteen years don’t seem to have tamed
Goatlord drummer Jeff Nardone’s libido. He’s taken on vocals as well as drums in Spun in
Darkness, and on “Nocturnal” he croaks “Fornication, masturbation, I am the specter deep inside of
you.” Nardone and his new cohorts (Tom Giacalone on guitar and Nick Otvos) make no attempt to
show up with those damn kids, with their technical wizardry and their hyperblasting. Giacolone riffs
deliberately, letting every chugga sink its teeth in. Obviously, this low-to-the-ground approach doesn’
t mesh with flashy shredding, so instead there’s the sinister melodies of “Reborn Dead” and “Arrival
of Prey.” Tightness and, well, rhythm were not exactly Goatlord’s strong suits, but Birthright stomps
around confidently whether it’s trudging or galloping. Here’s hoping it gets Nardone and crew some
action, or at least some cash in case sludgy retro death metal doesn’t bring in the ladies, because
they’re from Las Vegas where it’s legal to get hookers.

"...You've Found the Underground Church" - 100%
Written by BlackThrashAttack on July 3rd, 2007

A masterful combination of black metal, death metal, and doom metal. Reflections of the Solstice is
quite unique and very well done, featuring slow, doomy aesthetics (mainly); fast, aggressive
passages; rough, demented, and very powerful vocals; and production that is just raw enough to
capture the waves of dark energy that pour out of your speakers every time you listen to this album.

Goatlord combine black metal lyrical content and imagery with predominantly death metal styled
riffing and play at tempos ranging from funeral doom, ultra slow riffs to death metal blasting. Having
said that, the majority of the album is played at a medium slow tempo, along the lines of Samael's
first two albums, Worship Him and Blood Ritual.

Interestingly, an electric drum kit was used to record the album (or at least electric toms.) At first,
the electric toms may sound too clean when contrasted with other instruments (and other drums,)
but if you give them a chance, you'll find yourself falling in love with the frequent little tom fills that
this album is riddled with.

Hats off to these guys for putting together a masterpiece of darkness that isn't afraid to pick up the
beat once in a while for some quality death metal blasting. Reflections of the Solstice is a very
consistent album and top songs are hard to pick, but "The Fog", "Underground Church", and "Acid
Orgy" always stood out in my mind.
